After many years documenting her family history through traditional printmaking processes, Bunny Burson became interested in the genetic piece of my past and began looking for scientific images to express it. Since technology has revealed the structure of the chromosome, it has become a metaphor for our commonality, defining the scientific story of all of us and signifying that there is more that connects us than divides us. In 2020, artist Leah Aegerter and her began a collaboration at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, pairing her background in digital fabrication and technology with my work relating to genetics. This project is finally moving off the page and out of the screen, culminating in a large-scale stainless steel sculpture, ”The Common Code.” Fabricated by Urban Art Projects, the sculpture will be installed at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Village, Colorado from 2025-2027.
